Promoting The Power of Australian Native Botanicals

Promoting The Power of Australian Native Botanicals | Made For Me Skincare™

MADE FOR ME SKINCARE™ harnesses the extraordinary power of Australian native botanical ingredients to bring our customers ethically sourced, sustainable skincare products. Many studies have shown that synthetic ingredients are often much less effective than naturally sourced vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components.

The Science of Extracting Native Plant Ingredients

Indigenous communities across Australia have developed traditional methods of preparation of native plants for over tens of thousands of years, for both medicinal purposes and as staples in their traditional diet.

Recently, new extraction methods have been developed to utilise Western scientific methods to obtain highly concentrated forms of supercharged vitamins from the native plants to use in skincare formulas.

Currently, the leading state institution for researching Australian native botanicals is Southern Cross University in NSW. Utilising the laboratory technique of chromatography, which allows scientists to separate different components within the native ingredient and identify their potency, scientists at the university found many of our Australian native botanicals contain extremely high levels of vitamin A, C, E, antioxidants and other compounds that have anti-inflammatory, sunscreen, and anti-ageing properties.

The Sustainability of Australian Native Botanicals

One of the extraordinary benefits of utilising Australian native botanicals is their high level of sustainability as a natural resource.

The fruits and flowers can be collected whilst leaving the original plant intact in its natural environment. The plants have adapted to thrive perfectly in the Australian climate.

Little to no extra water, chemical or pesticide intervention is needed to see these plants produce large quantities of useable fruit. If the industry continues to be managed ethically and sustainably, Australian botanicals will go on to remain an invaluable resource for health and wellbeing products.

Australian Native Ingredients

MADE FOR ME SKINCARE™ utilises Australian native ingredients in many of their skincare products, some of the most commonly used native plants and their benefits include:

Quandong

Harvested between August and December, Quandongs, also known as Wild Peaches, hold extremely high natural magnesium, vitamin C, and vitamin E levels. They have also been found to have excellent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

For a long time, Quandong has been utilised by many indigenous groups in semi-arid and arid regions of Australia. For example, the Pitjantjatjara people used the Quandong as a substitute for meat. The preparation of the fruit is considered to be women’s business, and often the method includes removing the seed from inside and rolling the fleshy part of the fruit into a ball for the group to share.

Beyond the fruit, other plant parts, such as the roots and leaves, are very useful for medicinal purposes. Traditional owners utilise pastes made with the Quandong to treat boils and skin sores topically and relieve joint inflammation. The oil made from the crushed seeds could also be used as a hair conditioning treatment.

In the skincare industry, Quandongs are used in many treatments for the under eyes, and the natural substance of Rutin found in the fruits helps reduce signs of ageing and dark shadows.

Kakadu Plum

Depending on where you source them from, Kakadu Plums are usually available between January and July. Kakadu Plums are probably the most well researched Australian Native ingredient, as they have almost unrivalled health benefits. Not only do they have the highest natural Vitamin C content of any fruit in the world, but they have also been found to contain a compound that alleviates skin wrinkles and inflammation that may develop due to exposure to high UV levels.

Kakadu plums are traditionally used by indigenous groups in the Northern Territory and Arnhem Land. Their potency as an antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal indigenous ingredient meant that they were widely used in medicinal treatments. However, they are also an excellent source of nutrients and a staple in traditional indigenous diets.

Kakadu Plum extract is incredibly useful in the skincare industry for its anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory effects, which work to encourage collagen production and improve skin elasticity.

Davidson Plum

Davidson Plum is available in Northern NSW and Queensland and ripens throughout the year, differing depending on location. Davidson Plums contain high natural antioxidants, vitamin E, Zinc, Magnesium, Calcium and Lutein ( provides anti-inflammatory effects).

The Davidson Plum is recognised by many groups of Traditional Owners across the eastern and north-eastern. The fruits can be eaten raw, and the trunks can be used to create harpoons for hunting. The fruits and seeds can also be used for many different natural medicinal purposes.

The properties of Davidson Plums work to correct dark circles or sun damage, promote the production of collagen and hydrates the skin. The anti-inflammatory effects also can be beneficial for those with redness and acne.
